Serbia booked their place in next year's World Cup after a 5-0 thrashing of Romania in Belgrade.

In a first-half that saw five players booked, towering Valencia forward Nikola Zigic started the party when he headed home to give the hosts the lead on 37 minutes.

Five minutes after the restart, Marko Pantelic gave Serbia a decisive two-goal lead and a powerful volley from Zdravko Kuzmanovic added a third.

Romania defender Cristian Chivu was shown the red card late in the game as the visitors slumped to their fourth defeat of the campaign.

There was still time for Serbia to score again as Milan Jovanovic struck on 86 minutes and then again in stoppage time to complete the rout.

France secured second place in the group with a convincing 5-0 win over the Faroe Islands but will have to make it through the play-offs to qualify for the finals.

The hosts' early pressure pressure finally told shortly after the half-hour mark when Andre-Pierre Gignac slotted home from inside the area.

The Toulouse striker then doubled the lead four minutes later as France started to run away from the European minnows.

Arsenal defender William Gallas added a third shortly after the break and two late goals from Nicolas Anelka and Karim Benzema rounded off the scoring.

Despite a home triumph against Lithuania, Austria lost all hope of qualifying for next year's tournament due to France's win.

Marc Janko gave the hosts the lead with a little over 15 minutes played but Lithuania grabbed an equaliser through Marius Stankevicius.

But Roman Wallner scored what would prove to be the winning goal from the penalty spot with 10 minutes to go.
