Franck Ribery was once more the hero for France as he scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win over Lithuania at Stade de France.
Bayern Munich playmaker Ribery was the match-winner in Lithuania when the two countries met at the weekend.
Ribery fired home from the edge of the box on that occasion, and this time he poked home a cross from Andre-Pierre Gignac 15 minutes from the end.
The result moves France to within two points of leaders Serbia, while Lithuania slip to third spot, three points off the pace.
New Austria coach Dietmar Constantini marked his first match at the helm with a 2-1 success over Romania at home.
Romania took the lead on 24 minutes when Cristian Tanase pounced on a poor pass from Michael Gspurning to lift the ball into the net.
But Austria were level within a minute as Stefan Maierhofer set up Erwin Hoffer to equalise and the decisive goal arrived a minute before half-time.
Hoffer collected the ball in midfield and was allowed to run towards goal before smashing a low shot beyond the Romanian keeper.
